May Date Night Challenge

Is Your Marriage a Wall or a Window?

“But if we live in the light, as God is in the light, we can share fellowship with each other. Then the blood of Jesus, God’s Son, cleanses us from every sin. If we say we have no sin, we are fooling ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”—1 John 1:7-8 (NCV)

A wall is a barrier that is not meant to be transparent. It is built to keep things from entering into a dwelling, to keep elements like sunlight, rain, or wind from coming through. It is a solid structure that does not allow anyone to see what’s inside. Whereas a window is also a barrier, but it is transparent. It allows the outside to come in such as sunlight, the cool air on a spring day, or the sound of birds singing outside. It gives a view for others to see inside the dwelling.

Marriages take the shape of one of these barriers. So, what about your marriage? Does it look like a wall or a window? Do you give the world a bird’s-eye view into your marriage—is it vulnerable, authentic, and open to being shared? With marriages on the attack, especially godly marriages, it is easy to fall into protection mode and keep others from getting a glimpse inside. But the world needs to see how God intended marriage to be. We need to allow others to see how we deal with conflict, how we forgive, how we love one another, and how we do life together. With the world believing that marriage is obsolete, let us live out the Bible and be a light for the world to see.

This month, the Married Couples Ministry would like to partner with you to help your marriage be more transparent and authentic. To do that, we have come up with the following challenges for you and your spouse to enjoy.

Date Night Ideas for May

Challenge 1: Wisdom and Zeal
This month, invite a newly married couple to dinner or over for a game night. Take this opportunity to cultivate a friendship and open the door for you to share how God’s wisdom has sustained and led your marriage! In return, it will remind you and your spouse of the zeal of being newly married. It’s a win, win situation!

Challenge 2: Premarital Counselors
If you’re a seasoned couple and have a heart for marriage, how about becoming premarital counselors for couples that are about to take the big step into marriage? We know this might not be for everyone, but it usually involves a training course and a 7 to 12-week commitment. There is no better way than to come alongside a young couple to help them prepare for the biggest and best decision they will ever make!

Challenge 3: Skate Night
Are you ready to skate the night away? Visit your local skating rink and relive your youth together! What a fun way to spend the evening laughing through the night trying not to fall. When you’re done skating, go to your favorite diner and enjoy a good meal. Don’t forget the chocolate shake, you earned it!
